Saying Goodbye To A Home

Saying Goodbye To A Home

When leaving a home, it's important to honor the time you have spent within its walls and the life you lived there.

When we move from one residence to another, we often get so caught up in the forward thrust of where we are going that we forget to properly say goodbye to the home we are leaving behind. Yet saying goodbye is an important part of moving forward. It gives us a sense of completion so that we are able to fully inhabit our new space, having left nothing of ourselves in the old one. In this way, we honor the space that has held and nurtured us. At the same time, we cleanse it and empty it of our energy so that the new residents can make the space theirs.

Plan a walk through your home that begins and ends at the front door. Ideally, you will be alone or accompanied only by a person who shared the space with you. Prepare yourself mentally to be as present as you can during this process. As you enter the house, you might say, "I have come to thank you for being my home and to say goodbye." You might touch the walls with your hands as you move through the house, or you might burn sage as an offering, as well as an energy cleanser. Spend some time in each room expressing your gratitude and gathering or releasing any lingering energy from the room. As you do this, you are freeing your home to embrace its new occupants. Remember to visit your outside spaces as well. Plants are especially sensitive to the energy around them and will appreciate your consideration.

As you make your way back to the front door, know that you have completed your final journey through your home and that you have honored and blessed it with this ritual of farewell. As you close and lock the door behind you, say one last goodbye. Now you can walk freely into your future and fully inhabit the new spaces that will keep you safe and warm.

Let's Talk Interior Design Budgets..

This month on the blog I would like to take you through the journey of engaging an interior designer. But firstly I’d like to talk budgets..

So you have reached a point in your life where you cant look at paint samples or furniture anymore, I know. You want your weekends back and your other half is bored of walking around shops listening to you asking “do you think this colour would look alright with this grey sofa?”

So what do you do next? You spend a few more weeks procrastinating about the throw rug and cushions and keep going around in circles looking at all the beautiful homes on Instagram and Pinterest and keep wishing your home looked like the ones in the latest copy of Home Beautiful magazine..

Your best Friend..

So when your mate, who’s also bored of being shown pictures of how you’d like you home to look like on Insta suggests you have a look for a local Interior Designer. You jump on Google and hey presto there an interior designer in your area. You send then an email asking can they help and what’s the cost?. Well the interior designers first response will be, ‘I’d love to help you design your perfect home!” “'but before I can quote I need to find out more about your needs “ and then the next question will be “what’s your budget?”

No one likes to talk about budgets or money and up until this point you’ve probably not got past the shiny pictures and colour schemes.

When I ask my clients about budgets and they don’t have one, the next thing I mention is I cant spend 15-20 hours designing a room in your home without knowing what the budget is, is it $3K or $30K? There are three reasons why an interior designer asks about your budget.

1. We design a room to your budget , otherwise as the saying goes “' it’s how long is a piece of string?”

2. We need to know what quality of furnishings and taste you have and desire. Is it Kmart cheap, functional and trendy or upmarket quality pieces of furniture like ones from Globewest and Coco Republic?…

3. If we design a room and you cant afford to buy the furniture and decor to match the design we need to start all over again and guess what? we don’t get paid for this and we cant afford to work for free..

After The Budget Conversation..

After the rather awkward budget conversation there are two interior design options that will give you the finished and rather lust-worthy room you so much desire.

  1. If your budget is only going to stretch to a few cushions, rug and a throw to refresh your room and you already perhaps have some great furniture, then here at Lupton Interior Design we would suggest a Style Session which we offer locally and online across Australia from $150 per room. These sessions offer you the opportunity to chat to an experienced interior designer, show them your home and talk through your requirements and ideas. We will then come back to you with an electronically emailed mood board which will give you an overall cohesive design for you to go and buy all the items from yourself, in your own time and to your budget..

  2. If you require all new furniture, a colour scheme, fabrics or window treatments then a full room design service is what Lupton Interior Design would suggest for you. This full design service comes with a meet and greet session at your home or online via Skype and at this time we would also measure the room, talk about time-frames and budgets.. and come back to you with an personalised design proposal based on an hourly fee to complete the design for you. If deemed suitable for your requirements we can specify new furniture, decor, overall colour scheme, flooring and window treatments. We can also suggest local trades and specialists to complete the work for you. You also get access to trade discounts and heaps of unique local and online shops. Normally the price of the full room design fee is saved in the furniture and decor discounts when your order the items in the design through Lupton Interior Design. By the way.. we can save you up to 15% off furniture and decor at places like Globewest and Coco Republic ;-)

How to get started!

Drop us an email, call or fill in the contact form on our website and yes we will talk budgets..

Look forward to hearing from you soon.

The Latest Home Trends For 2019!

Matt Black Is The New Grey!

Okay, so your sensible self tells you to play it safe and install a white kitchen, right?! But there’s a huge range of matt black cabinetry and finishes flooding the market at the moment and matt black is the new must have surface for 2019! Mix some black cabinets in with white in either gloss or matt finish and team it with concrete or white bench tops for a contemporary modern kitchen like the one below.

Bling, Bling..

Kitchen Design by Lupton Interior Design

Kitchen Design by Lupton Interior Design

If your kitchen is modern or contemporary then why not add a bit of bling to a kitchen splash back like the one opposite that I incorporated into a black and timber kitchen design last year. Or if Hamptons classic is more your style then incorporate gold into your kitchen handles.

A little bit of gold also looks great everywhere in the home, like this coffee table display I styled to complete a house renovation with a coastal contemporary twist in a home I designed last year in Lake Macquarie NSW.

Embrace the calm simplicity of your home and go minimal. Think uncluttered, calm and free.. If you are like me and wondering what all the decluttering madness is with a new Netflix show called Tidying Up with Marie Kondo then your home is probably organised and clutter free. But if you have kids, a messy husband who likes to hoard or in the middle of a home renovation then you probably (like me) need to check out the craze that’s sweeping thew world right now. Check out Marie Kondo’s website for tips on tidying up your home and receiving more joy in your life.

Bar Carts

If you haven’t noticed bar carts are all the rage at the moment. Style yours with all of your favorite cocktail ingredients as when mixed into that posh high-ball glass will remind you of a recent tropical cruise or a dream vacy on the bucket list to Palm Springs ( that’s one of mine) ;-)

For some great cocktail recipes to keep the summer vibes going on the taste buds ( it aint dry February just yet) check out Steve The Bartender

Sustainable Natural Fabrics

If you are keen to reduce the amount of carbon used to produce your latest cushion splurge or tablecloth or would like to know that your new bed sheet’s were made from sustainable materials without nasty’s, then look for fabrics made from natural fibres or wool. Jute is also a good choice for a rug as it’s a fast-growing, renewable natural fibre.

When buying cotton items like bed sheets, bath mats and clothing check for the OEKO-TEK label which certify’s that the cotton has been tested to a standard 100 OEKO-TEK and produced without any nasty chemicals. If the label states it’s organic cotton, check to make sure it’s been through a friendly chemical process. My favorite online shop for organic cotton bedding and tableware is Peacock and Paisleys check out the website for a huge range of awesome bedding and tableware.

How To Style A Hall Console Table

Create a welcoming hallway with a beautifully styled console table.

Styling is easy once you know, but there are some important things to address to ensure you create a hall entry that not only looks amazing but also works from a practical stand point. The first step is to consider the function of your console table and its location, then evaluate your needs and style accordingly.

Add a mirror or artwork

Processed with VSCO with hb1 preset

If your console is sitting up against a wall in an entry way, you may wish to hang an artwork on a mirror above it. An artwork can make a grand opening statement for your home and is a great way to introduce colour and reflect your personality.

A mirror opens up an area to create a sense of space, it will also help to reflect light and create a brighter feel, while providing a place to check your hair before you rush out the door.

Tip: When selecting an artwork or mirror just be sure that the size works well with the scale and colour of the wall, the console and the other objects you are adding to the console.

Add a Lamp

Adding a table lamp on one side or both sides can offer a beautiful ambiance in the evening. If adding a lamp on just one side, make sure the objects you place on the opposite side help to create an overall balance look. For example; if your lamp is on the right side of the console, a vase at a lower height could be placed at the left hand side.

Add three decorative objects at a much smaller scale beside the vase to help create visual balance. Objects always looked best when placed in groups of odd numbers such as three or five.

Add Decorative Objects & Display Books

Add a catch bowl. For example, placing a decorative box or bowl on your console table to conceal the contents of your husbands pockets is both stylish and functional and means you will never lose your keys again!

Add A Plant Or Some Fresh Flowers

Add plants or flowers for a beautiful natural element. Flowers look and smell amazing and are great for adding a pop of colour to a room, while plants are an absolute must-have in order to create a welcoming oasis!

Why Home Interior Designers Are Worth It!

Lounging on your (admittedly meh) couch drooling over home decor magazines is one way to spend a Saturday. But how about actually creating your own cozy oasis?

Before you disregard the idea with an “I’d love to, but [insert excuse here] I’d just like you to know that transforming your home into the space you’ve been pining over (and Pinning over) actually is possible—you just might need some assistance.

I’m on hand to pull your imagined look together and manage the whole project if you’d like me to—making the transformation process as enjoyable as the final design (without killing your bank account).

Everyone always assumes that working with a designer will cost an arm and a leg, but like any good designer I will end up saving you money by choosing the right high-quality elements that never go out of style. A good designer is worth their weight in gold!

Still not convinced? Turns out, giving your home some love can be a powerful wellness practice (more on that in a later blog)

By transforming your space, you really can transform your life. Creating a space that is correctly balanced and proportioned with colour, light, scale, and texture can not only make you feel happier, but can also promote productivity and creativity.

Ready for the upgrade? Scroll down for 5 reasons to take the interior design plunge.

 1. They’ll find things you’ve never seen before

Your talent for finding chic home decor Instagram accounts knows no bounds but hunting down the pieces pictured in those photos is a next-level skill. With your personal designer on deck, you can trust they’ll do all the detective work for you.

And if the exact piece you’ve dreamed up doesn’t exist then I will contact some pretty talented local artists and/or furniture makers to make it for you!

2. You’ll score some awesome discounts

Not that your bargain-hunting skills in on the high street aren’t totally prime, but finding deals is your interior designer’s literal job—so you (and your bank account) can rest easy knowing you definitely got the best price on that dining table you’ve always wanted.

Besides using trade discounts, being aware of big sales, or knowing inexpensive yet high quality vendors, a good designer should be able to narrow in on what you’re looking for quickly, and then design the home of your dreams with an ease that you may never have been able to achieve on your own. Three cheers for making it look easy (and saving money).

 3. You’ll save a ton of time

“The main benefit is that it turns transforming your space from something that could potentially be super stressful and time consuming into (hopefully) an incredibly fun, easy and creative experience..

Lupton Interior Design handles everything in the process so you can focus on the other things that occupy your super busy days—like school runs, gym time and work assignments. From helping you pick out the pieces you want, placing the orders, and handling returns (which can be a total headache)—Lupton Interior Design is basically your personal design guru.

4. It’s an investment that will pay off

You’d never plan on giving up your dream home (obviously), but sometimes, life happens. Investing in your home’s design will help ensure you turn a tidy profit if you must move on.

By investing in interior design, you give yourself an immediate advantage over other homes in your neighborhood. Those homes may have the same number of bedrooms and bathrooms, but because you have a brand new, gorgeous kitchen renovation, your home immediately becomes more desirable and therefore sells more easily for a higher price.

5. You’ll end up with a space that’s uniquely you

Carbon-copying that bedroom you found on Pinterest sounds nice in theory—but it wouldn’t leave you with a personality-filled space that feels like home. And that’s one of the most important parts of interior design.

‘’I think that everyone that engages an interior designer or is considering it needs to be aware that we don’t just stick our signature style in your home, we take your vision and amp it up a gear, do all the leg work and save you a ton of money and time. At the end of the process you are left with a truly unique home that makes you feel good, is relaxing and welcoming and will stand the test of time’’ Bronika Carter - Interior Designer.

The verdict: It might be time to start looking at your vision board as a source of inspo (rather than a game-plan you need to execute)—and letting an expert fulfill your dream-digs status.

How To Style A Slipcover Sofa..

I love slipcover sofas and I was very lucky to be able to buy a new one recently. When I say lucky well my previous sofa that was a very good two-year-old IKEA sofa had a little accident whilst we were in the middle of our home renovation.

Well when I say the sofa had an accident I should explain further. My lovely ten-year-old British Blue cat had her cranky pants on one day whilst locked in the garage. The garage was the safest place for a pretty little house cat on this day as we had a wall and two doors missing on the house. So, she decided to use the sofa as a cat litter tray. Need I explain further…

Secretly I was pleased as it meant I could go and buy a new sofa ;-) and my husband couldn’t complain, well not too much. So last week I got to buy the slipcover sofa that I fondly admired for months in the shop window at James Lane every time I went to buy decor for my client’s houses.

Now if the cat decides to use it as a toilet in the future the sofa has a removable washable slipcover. Well that was my unique selling point when I reverse sold the sofa to my husband! Someone had to pay the credit card bill.

I was amazed at how quickly it arrived as it came within four days! Top marks to James Lane. You are awesome, as I can sometimes be a very impatient woman. But even I don’t mind waiting four days.

The slipcover sofa comes packed with a very easy to assemble slipcover and five massive super comfy cushions. So, I took one of the cushions off the sofa and popped it onto my lovely IKEA Rattan Rocking Chair and added two more 50 x 50 cm cushions to the sofa by poking one in between the back of one cushion and adding a feature cushion at the front. I added a throw to the arm of the chair and voila! Done.

Well madam Bear the cat thought I was done styling as you can see…

Bear (Madam)

Bear (Madam)

But I’m an interior designer.. so I had to play around a bit more. So I added the Jivika Rug from Provincial Home Living and the beautiful Woodland Lip stool from Globewest finally has a permanent place in my home. I have re-purposed the stool as a funky side table (god help anyone who spills a coffee on it!) and I’ve topped it off with an old cup and saucer, slice of my fav chilli chocolate and a faux plant and tiny glass vase. As you know, three things grouped together is the magic number in styling.

If you need help with your cats don’t come to me but if you need help with styling or rearranging furniture in a room, then I’m your gal.

Is Online Interior Design Right For You?

If you have read my previous blog called - What is online interior design? then I don’t need to go on about what online interior design is , but in this blog I thought I’d focus on the benefit’s of using online interior design.

E-design, online design, virtual design.. they are all the same things and guess what? they’re all done online. From Skype calls, to email, to shopping, the entire process involves working with a remote designer when you want and from wherever you are located. The entire process takes place virtually!

The communication is also super flexible. Maybe I’ll send you a design concept at 10:00 AM AEST and you aren’t available give me some feedback until you get off work at 6:00 PM AEST. No problem!

Traditional interior designers typically work M-F from 9-5, but you might too! And with school drop offs, work schedules and squeezing in a yoga class, you may not have time to meet with a designer, even if you don’t have a traditional job.

Online interior design makes it easy for anyone who already has a full to-do list, to get professional, personalized design help without ever leaving their house and with minimal scheduled appointments.

Processed with MOLDIV Processed with MOLDIV

Online interior design gives you everything you need to decorate your space.

Everything can be purchased online these days and that’s the beauty of online interior design. With my online designs I offer;

Pinterest Online Design.jpg
  1. A skype or phone call (a bit of a brainstorming session)

  2. A style questionnaire and room measuring guide

  3. 2 x concept mood boards (an online room mockup)

  4. 1 x Final Design mood board

  5. A shopping list with all the information you need to order your new pieces

  6. A floor plan so you know where to place your new items

  7. 3D Room perspectives

  8. Detailed instructions so you know where to place accessories and art

Online Interior Design is Cost Effective

Interior designers have a bad rep for being highly priced. And while traditional interior design does take more hours to complete on the designer’s part because they offer a wider range of services, there’s no denying that there are certain decorators out there that will up-charge trade-only items to such a high-percent that only the rich and famous can afford their work.

So what online interior design lacks in the full-service department, it makes up for in price.

Online Interiors Design Is Flexible And Achievable On Any Budget

  • Select trade-only exclusive furniture and decor

  • Select trade-only artwork and wallpaper

  • Select paint colours for a house exterior to match existing roof, window and gutters

  • Select and order decor items such as cushions, ornaments and throw covers to finish a room that had been recently renovated.

  • Sourced a unique artwork for a clients bedroom

Something else you get with an online interior design service..

Access to trade only exclusive accounts. So instead of paying $3000 for a dining table I can probably buy it for you for about $800, I add on some margin ( I’ve got to earn a living and pay the bills too) and you will still save $$$. And you will get a $3000 quality dining table instead of some cheap rickety thing you can buy on the high street that will only last a few years and guess what?! you have only paid $1200 for it! win, win!

Buy the time I’ve specified all of the decor and decor items in your room I will not of just saved you thousands of dollars but you will also get access to items that are unique, high end and the best bit is your best mate is not going to turn up and say ‘‘ooh I love your style! wonder if I could use that in my living room?!’’ and try and copy your room, unless they want to use my service too..

Creating cute kids bedrooms is harder than you think especially if you want to make sure it looks cute and cool for them at 5 years old but can be easily adapted with a few inexpensive tweaks to see them into their teens.

Spend some money buying some good quality timber furniture like a bedside table, bed and chest of drawers that will withstand all the kicks and bumps is a good place to start and then you can accessorize with cushions and artwork and change these items to suit their age and tastes as they get older.

Paint is a relativity easy and cheap way to transform a room, so go with what colour you think will be an either neutral colour as a background to other colours or pick a bright colour and accessorize around it and change it in the future.

What Is Online Interior Design And How Does It Work?

Virtual Kitchen Design

Virtual Kitchen Design

These days with technology moving so fast, online design software packages and virtual room design adverts are popping up online all the time, it’s no wonder that the online interior design industry is going to be the next big thing in Australia. Did you know that by 2020 we will be able to go to most major kitchen and bathroom companies, stick on a pair of special virtual V-Ray type glasses and walk around what our kitchen/bathroom will look like for real in our homes and it will all be designed in a virtual studio!

People are busier than ever with life and work, so more and more people are after a fast an affordable interior design solution, these days you can buy all the items in a room designed online from a curated room design, down load shop the look mood boards for free and then purchase all the furniture in your own time and even buy whole room design packages online, all you need to do is select the room you like, buy and sit back and wait for the furniture to arrive, put it in place and add the decor and you have a Instaworthy room..

So, what’s the benefit in choosing online interior design V traditional interior design?

Traditional Interior Design.

The traditional way of designers providing an interior design service means that designers probably work in a niche geographical area to there home or office, they provide an initial in-home consultation and then tailor a design to meet your needs. Sometimes you can go shopping with them to see fabrics and furniture in the flesh so to speak or the designer might provide a mood board with all the samples of fabrics, paint etc. However, the process is time consuming and the furniture shops might be limited to high street and local boutique shops, so it helps to pick a designer that has good rapport with these local shops and he/she might pass on some trade discounts. This process is quite time consuming and because the designer will be doing a lot of leg work i.e. driving around shops and looking at hard and soft furnishings it will also be a costlier way of designing your home with an interior designer.

Online Interior Design.

Online Mood Board Sample

Online Mood Board Sample

The online design process is much simpler and faster with the customer firstly choosing an online design package to suit the room they’d like designed and paying upfront online. The interior designer will then either schedule a 30 min phone or Skype call (I like to Skype) or the designer may just request photos of the room be emailed to them for review. A questionnaire is normally filled out by the customer along with room measurements taken by the client, and this gives the designer an idea of which bits of furniture the client wishes to stay and which will go, or if it’s a blank canvas, with a Sype call the designer can see what natural light is in the room, what the rest of the home style looks like, likes and dislikes of the client etc.

Also online interior design means that absolutely anyone can utilize a professional interior designer regardless if they are in a remote area, time poor or just budget savvy.

Concept Design Stage.

Concept Bathroom Mood Board

Concept Bathroom Mood Board

Using the information from the emails/ phone call and questionnaire the interior designer will start to produce an online concept mood board placing all the colour samples, décor items and furniture in the online concept mood board for the client to see. The designer will either email or pass on log in details for the client to use an online interactive mood board to review the design and the client will then have a feel for the overall scheme by looking at the board. The client will then approve and/or change any items and sign off on the concept board.

Final Design Stage.

Next the designer will refine the concept mood board and turn this into a final design mood board. This process might take the designer a little longer and he/she will focus on making sure the furniture and décor is the correct size for the room, if the designer ordered fabric or hard samples then he/she will make sure that the colours seen online are the same in the flesh and just make sure it all comes together in a cohesive room design.

The final room design will then be emailed to the client for review and approval. At this stage any changes should be minimal if at all as these should have been ironed out in the concept phase. The final mood design will also include an online fully interactive shopping list with links directly to the shops, this gives the client the ability to buy the furniture/décor in their own time or order everything straight away. Some design packages also provide floor plans to see the placement of furniture in the room, 3D rendered views of what the room will look like after all the furniture, fabrics, décor etc. is in place and instructions on how to paint etc.

What else do you get when you buy an online design package?

3D Rendered Living Room

3D Rendered Living Room

Most interior designers have trade or affiliate marketing programs. I have some trade programs where by I can offer up to 25-50% off furniture and décor if the client orders direct through me at the time of receiving the final design.

Like most online designers I also use affiliate links so if the client clicks on an item I have specified in the design and buys it I get a small percentage of the profit. Online designers like to keep the cost of the design to a minimum and make some extra $ on the affiliate marketing..

You will receive a beautiful room designed by a professional online interior designer who will provide the same service to you as you would receive from a traditional face-to-face designer only more affordable.

With both high end bespoke and main stream furniture shops online, you will also have access to some unique and affordable furniture and décor.

How long does an online room design take?

Usually about 1-2 weeks for one room design, it really depends on the size and complexity of the room and how long it takes to define the concepts. Kitchen and bathrooms are more complex and could take 2-6 weeks to design and specify, but again it depends of the client would like just the design or the designer to go out to kitchen companies to gain quotes, organise samples of doors and tiles etc.

Which rooms can online interior design be used for?

Every single room in the home, no matter how big or small..

How much does it cost?

Smaller rooms like hallways with Lupton Interior Design start at $199, a dining room or bedroom design $299 and a typical living room would cost $399. Kitchens and bathrooms are assessed and quoted for on an individual basis. Full details on the design packages can be found on my online interior design website page.

Can online design be utilized for just a few bits of art work here or one or two bits of furniture or décor to complete a room?

Sample Artwork Mood Board

Sample Artwork Mood Board

Absolutely. It can work for clients looking for a few extra bits of furniture or a piece of artwork to finish a room. I quote on an individual basis and prices start at $199 for 2 hours of my time and $199 for a Designer on Call package. (see details on the Designer On Call Packages on my website) It’s easy to work together by email and text message to share images of pieces of furniture/decor and collaborate together to find that perfect item to finish the room.
